How does it work?
Getting your certifications online with CEUMatrix is easy! First, select which substance abuse continuing education or counselor continuing education courses you’d like to enroll in by adding them to your shopping cart. Once all your desired courses are added to your cart, follow our check out procedure to complete your enrollment.
You will then be given instant access to the course materials, or if you prefer, you may have us mail them to you. There is an additional fee of $20/course for hard copies.
To access your courses, login at the Student Center and click My Courses on the right side of the page. Click on the title of the course you wish to access. On the following page click on the title again as it appears under the word Lessons (middle of the page). This will take you to the course specific page, scroll down a little and you will see the blue buttons to Download the course PDF and to access the quiz.
There is no timeframe for taking the quiz, nor is there a limit on the number of times you may take it to achieve a score of 80% or better. As always, you are welcome to call or email with any questions or concerns you have along the way!

Why get certified?
The evidence is conclusive that addiction is highly correlated with criminal behavior and criminal involvement. Therefore, the adult and juvenile justice systems and providers of substance abuse treatment share a responsibility to assist drug-involved offenders in their recovery. It is this shared responsibility which led to the recognition for the need of a certification process for Criminal Justice Professionals who work with the substance abusing criminal offender.
There are certain knowledge areas and skills that are required to provide effective treatment and case management services to adult and juvenile drug involved offenders. Certified Criminal Justice Addiction Professionals (CEUMatrix’s) must demonstrate the ability to provide effective services including assessment, case planning, case management, linking with other treatment, human services and criminal justice providers, monitoring, counseling, and advocacy. In addition, CEUMatrix’s must be knowledgeable of the rehabilitative services provided by the treatment and criminal justice systems. Knowledge is required in such diverse areas as pharmacology treatment theories and modalities, involuntary commitment procedures, criminal case processing, court alternatives and conditions of probation, to name a few.
The overlap of roles and responsibilities has resulted in greater communication and interdependence among the courts, adult and juvenile justice professionals, and the alcohol and other drug abuse treatment professionals. Many corrections agencies routinely provide substance abuse treatment services. Case management of drug-involved offenders is provided by substance abuse treatment staff. The development of a credential for Certified Criminal Justice Addiction Professionals is designed to strengthen the supervision and rehabilitative potential provided by the two systems.

What is a TIP?
Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs), developed by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), are best-practice guidelines for the treatment of substance use disorders. CSAT draws on the experience and knowledge of clinical, research, and administrative experts to produce the TIPs, which are distributed to facilities and individuals across the country. The audience for the TIPs is expanding beyond public and private treatment facilities to include practitioners in mental health, criminal justice, primary care, and other health care and social service settings.
