Compassion Satisfaction: Thriving While Working in Substance Use, Criminal Justice, and Other Challenging Settings (3 hours)

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the psychological and physical symptoms of compassion fatigue and explain how indirect trauma develops in helping professionals exposed to the suffering of others.
  • Identify the cumulative effects of compassion fatigue on professional functioning, including job resentment and impaired ability to support clients in substance use, criminal justice, and other challenging settings.
  • Apply strategies for transitioning from compassion fatigue to compassion satisfaction in clinical and counseling practice.

Course Description: Compassion Satisfaction: Thriving While Working in Substance Use, Criminal Justice, and Other Challenging Settings covers compassion fatigue — the emotional and physical exhaustion that can develop when professionals are repeatedly exposed to the pain, trauma, and despair of the people they serve. It is designed for those working in substance use, criminal justice, and other demanding helping fields where indirect trauma is common. The course examines psychological symptoms such as frustration, irritability, and feelings of inadequacy, as well as physical symptoms including headaches, sleep problems, and muscle tension. Participants will explore practical strategies for shifting from compassion fatigue toward compassion satisfaction in their work.
