Compassion Satisfaction: Thriving While Working in Substance Use, Criminal Justice, and Other Challenging Settings (3 hours)

Learning Objectives

Compassion Fatigue is defined as “Profound emotional and physical erosion that takes place when you are exposed to the hurt of others”.  This indirect trauma results in  absorption of  the pain of others, including those who are suicidal or in chronic despair.  The effects of compassion fatigue are cumulative.  Psychological symptoms include frustration, irritability, sadness, inadequacy, and preoccupation.  Physical symptoms can include headaches, stomach aches, tight muscles, and sleep problems.  These psychological and physical problems can spill over into our work, affecting how we function in our job and even cause job resentment.  This course provides suggestions for how to turn compassion fatigue into compassion satisfaction.
