  • Clinical Evaluation
  • Treatment Planning
  • Referral
  • Service Coordination
  • Counseling
  • Client, Family, and Community Education
  • Documentation
  • Professional and Ethical Responsibilities

Please see the “Package Contents” section below for the complete list of courses included in this package.

Certification Requirements

  • Education Required: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Work Experience: Work experience hours are accumulated during CIT status toward the target credential: 2,000 hours for LAC (Licensed Addiction Counselor), 4,000 hours for CAC (Certified Addiction Counselor), or 6,000 hours for RAC (Registered Addiction Counselor).
  • Supervised Hours: 300 hours of direct clinical supervision from a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), with a minimum of 1 hour of face-to-face supervision per week.
  • State Exam: No exam is required for CIT status.

Important Notes

The CIT (Counselor in Training) is a supervised status issued by the Louisiana Addictive Disorders Regulatory Authority (LADRA). It is not a standalone credential; it is a 12-month renewable status that allows applicants to accumulate supervised hours toward a full LAC, CAC, or RAC credential. All supervised work must be conducted under a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS). The maximum CIT duration is 72 months (6 years).

Renewal Requirements

20 continuing education hours per year, all related to substance abuse. CIT status must be renewed annually and cannot exceed 72 months total.
