Package Information

Louisiana CAC Certification Requirements and Course Package

This course package offers substantial savings versus purchasing the courses individually. Courses are taken at your convenience, there is no time limit, and everything is done online. If you have any other questions please call John Tinsley at (512) 843-0866.

What This Package Covers

Louisiana requires 300 hours of education for the RAC, CAC, and LAC credentials. This CEU Matrix 300-hour package provides full coverage of the required education hours. At least 180 hours must be substance use disorder-specific, aligned with the 12 Core Functions of addiction counseling: Screening, Intake, Orientation, Assessment, Treatment Planning, Counseling, Case Management, Crisis Intervention, Client Education, Referral, Reports and Record Keeping, and Consultation. A minimum of 6 hours must be in professional ethics. The remaining hours may be in related counseling education (psychology, sociology, human development, etc.). Louisiana places no restrictions on completing education through distance learning.

Please see the “Package Contents” section below for the complete list of courses included in this package.

Certification Requirements

  • Education Required: LAC: Master’s degree in human services, behavioral science, or approved discipline. CAC: Bachelor’s degree in human services, behavioral science, or related discipline. RAC: High school diploma or equivalent (minimum age 21).
  • Work Experience: LAC: 2,000 hours; CAC: 4,000 hours; RAC: 6,000 hours. All must be supervised work experience in an agency or facility that regularly treats clients with addictive disorders (paid or voluntary). Maximum 2,000 hours credited per year. Must be attested to by a licensed mental health provider, CAC, RAC, or designated facility administrator.
  • Supervised Hours: 300 hours of direct clinical supervision, provided face-to-face with a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS). Supervision covers the 123 competencies outlined in TAP 21 (Addiction Counseling Competencies). Minimum 1 hour per week. Must be documented and verified by the supervising CCS.
  • State Exam: LAC: IC&RC AADC examination. CAC and RAC: IC&RC ADC examination. Administered per ADRA examination requirements.

Important Notes

This package provides 300 hours of education, meeting Louisiana’s full 300-hour requirement. All applicants must also complete a separate 300-hour direct clinical supervision requirement with a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) — this is a fieldwork requirement, not online coursework. Minimum age 21 for all three credentials. Background check, 3 letters of recommendation, and 2-year sobriety requirement apply. CAC and RAC cannot practice independently; LAC has independent scope of practice. In-service training conducted by an employer does not count toward continuing education for renewal.

Renewal Requirements

Biennial (every 2 years); 48 CE hours per cycle, including a minimum of 6 hours in professional ethics. All continuing education must be from an ADRA-approved educational provider (AEP) or approved institution of higher education (AIHE) — in-service training does not qualify.
