Certification Requirements
- Education Required: High school diploma/GED minimum. Work experience is tiered by degree level — a higher degree significantly reduces the required hours (see “Work Experience”).
- Work Experience: Supervised work experience in alcohol and drug counseling settings – tiered by education level: high school/GED: 6,000 hours; Associate’s: 5,000 hours; Bachelor’s: 4,000 hours; Master’s or higher: 2,000 hours.
- Supervised Hours: Supervised clinical practicum in SUD counseling, minimum 10 hours in each IC&RC ADC performance domain — tiered by education level: high school/GED: 300 hours; Associate’s: 250 hours; Bachelor’s: 200 hours; Master’s or higher: 100 hours.
- State Exam: Passing score on the IC&RC ADC exam.
Important Notes
Applicants must live or work in New Mexico at least 51% of the time at application and testing.
Renewal Requirements
40 continuing education hours every 2 years.
