Substance Abuse Treatment: Group Therapy (TIP 41) (5 hours)

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe the five models of group therapy used in substance abuse treatment: psychoeducational, skills development, cognitive-behavioral, support groups, and interpersonal process groups.
• Identify the key principles and therapeutic factors that make group therapy effective for treating substance use disorders.
• Compare the goals, structure, and techniques of each group therapy model and explain when each is most appropriate.
• Apply criteria for selecting and placing clients in appropriate group therapy formats based on their treatment needs and readiness.
• Explain how group dynamics develop through distinct phases and describe the leader’s role in managing each phase.
• Describe strategies for adapting group therapy approaches for clients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.
• Analyze the research evidence supporting the efficacy of group therapy compared to individual therapy for substance use disorder treatment.
• Demonstrate techniques for managing common group challenges, including resistance, conflict, dominance, and scapegoating.
• Outline the training, supervision, and competencies required for effective group therapy leadership in substance abuse treatment settings.

John Tinsley

Ph.D.

Dr. John H. Tinsley is a former assistant professor of Medical Physiology at the Texas A&M University System College of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas; M.S. from the University of North Carolina; and his B.S. from the University of Oklahoma.

He has been teaching, training, consulting and conducting research in the fields of Medical Physiology and Behavioral Biology for over twenty-nine years. Dr. Tinsley has authored over twenty-five professional and refereed articles, including invited reviews. He has been a member of the American Society for Physiology, and work done in 2001 led to an international award from The European Society on Microcirculation. Dr. Tinsley has received research funding from the Veteran’s Administration, American Heart Association, and Scott and White Hospital. In addition, he has served on numerous review committees for national grant-funding agencies and scientific journals.
