Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy to substance abuse treatment for offenders with antisocial personality disorder.
  • Identify the DSM diagnostic criteria for antisocial personality disorder and explain its relationship to criminal behavior and substance use.
  • Apply sociotherapy and resocialization concepts to the treatment of felons with co-occurring mental disorders and substance abuse.
  • Analyze the role of clinical sociology in community mental health settings serving offender populations.
  • Describe strategies for establishing therapeutic relationships with involuntary clients who exhibit antisocial behaviors.
  • Explain how social norms, group dynamics, and deinstitutionalization concepts apply to the reintegration of convicted criminals into the community.
  • Demonstrate CBT techniques adapted for use with offender populations, including addressing criminal thinking and substance use simultaneously.
  • Develop group therapy approaches for clients with antisocial personality disorder that address both criminal behavior and addiction.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of CBT interventions for reducing criminal recidivism and substance abuse in offender populations.

Course Description: The Offender and Addiction – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy covers cognitive behavioral approaches for working with adult clients who have both chronic substance abuse histories and persistent antisocial behaviors, and is designed for criminal justice and counseling professionals. Participants will learn to identify patterns of substance abuse linked to behaviors such as dishonesty, impulsivity, aggression, and irresponsibility, and will explore the process by which clients can unlearn and relearn norms, values, and attitudes. The course also addresses group-based sociological interventions, including sociodrama, sociometry, and social goal-setting exercises aimed at reducing the risk of relapse and rearrest. The instructor is Rand L. Kannenberg, MA, LAC, CCS, CCM, a Licensed Addiction Counselor and Certified Clinical Sociologist with extensive experience in substance abuse treatment and corrections-based training across the United States and internationally.

RAND L. KANNENBERG is a Licensed Addiction Counselor, a Certified Case Manager, and a Certified Clinical Sociologist as well as an approved education provider by both NBCC and NAADAC. Kannenberg, creator of Resocial Group TM: "A Group Treatment Curriculum for Adults with Antisocial Behavior and Substance Abuse," has been executive director of Criminal Justice Addiction Services in Lakewood, Colorado since 1995, and has provided substance abuse and corrections advanced level training and continuing education workshops in 40 states, Italy, Puerto Rico and South Africa. He also has a private clinical practice specializing in forensic drug and alcohol adult assessments.

Kannenberg graduated from the state department of corrections basic training academy and completed the extended prison based training program. He has worked in two correctional facilities, a halfway house, a day reporting center and at a treatment center. He is a credentialed consultant with physicians in emergency departments and on the medical units at several local hospitals. He completed his graduate program in 1984 and has been treating amphetamine and amphetamine-like substance use disorders regularly since 1999. He has been a featured speaker or trainer at nearly 300 state, regional, national, and international workshops or conferences. Kannenberg, distinguished career award nominee and Public Health Champion of the Year recipient, is author of Sociotherapy for Sociopaths TM (2003) and Case Management Handbook for Clinicians (2004).
