Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe the evidence supporting the effectiveness of medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorders in criminal justice settings.
• Identify the FDA-approved medications used for OUD treatment and explain how each is administered in jail and prison settings.
• Explain the impact of untreated opioid use disorder on individuals transitioning from incarceration to the community, including recidivism and public health consequences.
• Describe the barriers to implementing MAT programs in jails and prisons and identify strategies for overcoming them.
• Analyze the role of MAT in the reentry process and its contribution to reducing overdose deaths following release from incarceration.
• Apply evidence-based practices for coordinating MAT between correctional facilities and community treatment providers.
• Explain the ethical and legal considerations related to providing or withholding MAT in criminal justice settings.
• Describe the impact of opioid use disorders on families and communities and how MAT in criminal justice settings can mitigate these effects.

John Tinsley

Ph.D.

Dr. John H. Tinsley is a former assistant professor of Medical Physiology at the Texas A&M University System College of Medicine. He received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas; M.S. from the University of North Carolina; and his B.S. from the University of Oklahoma.

He has been teaching, training, consulting and conducting research in the fields of Medical Physiology and Behavioral Biology for over twenty-nine years. Dr. Tinsley has authored over twenty-five professional and refereed articles, including invited reviews. He has been a member of the American Society for Physiology, and work done in 2001 led to an international award from The European Society on Microcirculation. Dr. Tinsley has received research funding from the Veteran’s Administration, American Heart Association, and Scott and White Hospital. In addition, he has served on numerous review committees for national grant-funding agencies and scientific journals.
