Virginia requires 200 hours of education and training for the Associate Addiction Counselor (AAC) credential, including a minimum of 6 hours in substance use disorders ethics. This CEU Matrix 200-hour package provides the full education requirement.

Certification Requirements
- Education Required: High school diploma or GED.
- Work Experience: 4,000 hours (2 years full-time) of work experience as a drug and alcohol counselor. Must be currently employed at time of application.
- Supervised Hours: 200 hours of on-the-job clinical supervision with a minimum of 10 hours in each of the 4 counselor domains.
- State Exam: No exam required.
Important Notes
Issued by the Virginia Certification Board (VCB). After holding the AAC for 4 consecutive years, professionals may upgrade to the CADC without a degree.
Renewal Requirements
40 continuing education hours every 2 years, including a minimum of 3 hours in professional ethics.
