What This Package Covers

Virginia requires 300 hours of education and training for the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) credential, including 6 hours in professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities. This CEU Matrix 300-hour package provides the full education requirement.

Education must be specific to the 4 ADC domains:

Certification Requirements

  • Education Required: Bachelor’s degree minimum.
  • Work Experience: 4,000 hours (2 years full-time) of clinical work experience in the specific ADC domains. Must be currently employed as a drug and alcohol counselor at time of application.
  • Supervised Hours: 200 hours of on-the-job clinical supervision with a minimum of 10 hours in each of the 4 ADC domains.
  • State Exam: IC&RC ADC examination (150 multiple-choice questions, computer-based, 3 hours).

Important Notes

Issued by the Virginia Certification Board (VCB). Note: while many employers accept the CADC, they may also require the CSAC (Certified Substance Abuse Counselor), a separate state-specific credential issued through the Virginia Board of Counseling.

Renewal Requirements

40 continuing education hours every 2 years, including a minimum of 3 hours in professional ethics.
