Certification Requirements
- Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in health/human services OR 5 years addiction counseling experience.
- Work Experience: 180 hours of supervised work experience demonstrating competency in all 12 core counseling functions (minimum 10 hours per function).
- Supervised Hours: Supervision is integrated into the 180-hour work experience requirement. The supervised experience must cover all 12 core counseling functions with at least 10 hours per function.
- State Exam: NAADAC-NCC Level II Examination + DC Jurisprudence Examination.
Important Notes
DC uses NAADAC standards (not IC&RC). Key difference from CAC I: Recovery Process increases from 3 to 9 hours, and two additional topics added (Treatment Planning/Research and Counseling Skills).
Renewal Requirements
40 continuing education hours every 2 years, including 6 hours professional ethics, 3 hours trauma counseling, 2 hours LGBTQ cultural competency or specialized clinical treatment, and 4 hours (10%) in DC public health priorities as designated by the Director. First renewal is exempt from CE requirements. Important restrictions on online CE delivery (max 6 hours).
