Are your social work courses ASWB ACE approved?
Yes. CEU Matrix is an ASWB Approved Continuing Education (ACE) provider. Our courses meet the Association of Social Work Boards’ national standards for continuing education and are accepted by social work licensing boards in 49 states and Washington, D.C.
What does "ASWB ACE approved" mean for my license?
ASWB ACE approval means a course has met rigorous, nationally recognized standards for content, instructors, and record-keeping. Your state board — not ASWB — sets how many CE hours you need, so ACE approval makes a course acceptable while you remain responsible for confirming it fits your state’s specific rules.
Is ASWB ACE credit accepted in every state?
It’s accepted in 49 states and Washington, D.C. The one exception is New York, which only accepts continuing education from providers approved directly by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). A few states also limit how many hours you can earn through self-paced online courses — check your state’s rules or our state-by-state guide.
I'm licensed in New York — can I use these courses?
Not on ASWB ACE approval alone. New York (8 NYCRR 74.10) only accepts CE from providers approved directly by NYSED. If you’re a New York LMSW or LCSW, look for courses that carry NYSED provider approval.
How many CE hours do I need to renew my social work license?
It depends on your state and license level. For example, Texas requires 30 hours per renewal cycle, California and New York require 36, and North Carolina requires 40. Use our state-by-state guide to see your exact hours, ethics requirements, and renewal deadline.
Do I need ethics CE hours?
Almost every state requires a set number of ethics hours each renewal cycle — for example, 6 in Texas, 6 in California (Law & Ethics), and 4 in North Carolina. CEU Matrix offers ASWB ACE-approved ethics courses that satisfy this requirement in most states.
What about cultural competence or special-population hours?
Many states require training in cultural competence, diversity, or a specific population — for example, Texas requires 3 hours on a distinct population, and Washington, D.C. requires LGBTQ and public-health hours. Check your state’s requirements and we’ll flag which courses qualify.
Do requirements differ by license level (LBSW/LSW, LMSW, LCSW)?
Yes. Bachelor’s-level (LBSW/LSW), master’s-level (LMSW/LGSW), and clinical (LCSW/LICSW) licenses can carry different hour totals and content mandates. Our state guides break the requirements down by license type.
What counts as continuing education for social workers?
Continuing education is structured, board-approved learning that keeps your professional knowledge current — online courses, live webinars, workshops, and conferences. To count toward license renewal, the activity generally must be approved by an accepted body such as ASWB ACE and documented with a certificate of completion.
What are Category 1 and Category 2 CEUs?
Category 1 (sometimes called Category A) refers to formal, pre-approved continuing education from an approved provider — which is what ASWB ACE-approved courses count as. Category 2 covers less formal activities like independent reading or teaching, which many states cap or don’t accept. CEU Matrix courses are Category 1.
What's the difference between a CE, a CEU, and a contact hour?
For social work licensing, one CE hour equals one contact hour — one hour of approved instruction. The term “CEU” historically meant 10 contact hours in the academic sense, but most boards and providers now use “CE hour” and “contact hour” interchangeably.

How do I report my hours to my state board or CE Broker?
Your certificate of completion documents every course you finish. You submit that certificate to your state board or, in states that use CE Broker, upload it to your CE Broker account to record your hours. Keep your certificates for your records.
What happens if my social work license expires?
If your license lapses, most boards require you to complete any outstanding CE hours plus reinstatement paperwork and fees before you can practice again, and practicing on an expired license can carry penalties. Completing your CE before your renewal deadline avoids this — check your board’s specific reinstatement rules.
How long should I keep my certificates?
Keep every certificate for at least four to six years, even after you renew. Most boards audit a percentage of licensees each cycle and will ask you to produce documentation of your completed hours.
I also hold a substance-abuse credential (like a CADC or LCDC) — can courses count for both?
