Addiction counselors hold credentials issued by different bodies: national certification organizations, IC&RC member boards, and state licensing agencies. Each sets its own CE hour requirement, renewal cycle length, and content category rules. This post is the reference grid for what each major credential requires.

Why CE Requirements Differ Across Credentials
The phrase “counselor training” means different things depending on which body issued your credential. A NAADAC NCAC I holder renews through NCC AP. A Texas LCDC holder renews through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) with different domain requirements. A New York CASAC holder renews through OASAS under IC&RC reciprocity rules. None of these align automatically.
Many counselors carry more than one credential, and the CE you complete for one renewal may or may not count toward another. The tables below give you the reference data by credential. Verify specific hour counts with your issuing board, as requirements can change between cycles.
NAADAC National Credentials: CE Requirements
NAADAC’s credentialing arm, the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCC AP), issues three foundational credentials. All three run on a two-year renewal cycle. See the NAADAC renewal process page for current renewal application details.

Key rule: CE hours must come from NCC AP-approved providers. Provider approval is separate from NBCC, IC&RC, or state board approval. If a provider holds NAADAC Provider #6310, those hours are approved for NCC AP credential renewal.

IC&RC Credentials: CE Requirements
IC&RC sets minimum credentialing standards; each member board applies those standards with its own additions. CE requirements for IC&RC credentials are administered by the member board in your state, not directly by IC&RC. This means exact hour counts vary by jurisdiction. The figures below reflect IC&RC’s published minimums. Review the IC&RC credentials page and contact your local member board for jurisdiction-specific requirements.

Key rule: CE must be approved by the IC&RC member board in your state. NAADAC-approved CE does not automatically count toward IC&RC credential renewal unless your member board specifically accepts it.

Ohio note: Ohio credentials renew through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board (OCDP). CE providers must hold OCDP approval (Provider #50-19236 for CEU Matrix). NAADAC approval alone does not satisfy OCDP requirements.
Texas note: The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) regulates LCDC renewal. LCDC counselors with a master’s degree or above need 24 CE hours per 2-year cycle; counselors below master’s level need 40 hours. Required content includes 3 hours of ethics, 6 hours of HIV/Hep C/STD content, and a human trafficking course. CE must cover HHSC’s required content domains, which include professional responsibility, counseling theory and practice, substance use pharmacology, and co-occurring mental health. Note: LCDC II and LCDC III credentials do not exist in Texas.
North Carolina note: NCSAPPB approves providers for CADC and LCAS renewal. CEU Matrix is NCSAPPB approved. CADC renewal requires 60 CE hours per 2-year cycle, broken out as 30 hours SUD-specific, 3 hours ethics, 3 hours HIV/AIDS/STD/TB/BBP, and 3 hours in a specialty topic. Verify current content domain requirements directly with NCSAPPB.
New York note: CASAC renewal runs through OASAS. The three-year cycle requires 60 CE hours, with OASAS-approved provider status required. Many national NAADAC-approved providers also hold OASAS approval, but confirm before starting hours.
Required Content Categories Across Credentials
Most credentials require more than just “any CE hours.” The categories below appear as mandatory or strongly recommended across multiple renewal bodies:

Ethics CE requires explicit classification on the certificate. A general clinical webinar does not qualify as ethics CE even if it covers ethical topics. The ACA Code of Ethics requirements for addiction counselors covers what topics satisfy ethics CE across credential types.
How CE Hours Transfer Across Credentials
Many counselors carry both a national credential (NCAC I or ADC) and a state credential (CDCA or LCDC). The question is whether hours completed for one renewal count toward the other.
NAADAC and IC&RC: CE completed for NAADAC NCC AP renewal counts toward IC&RC renewal only if your member board accepts NCC AP-approved providers. Some do; others maintain separate lists. Confirm before completing hours.
State credits toward national credentials: CE completed for Ohio CDCA or Texas LCDC renewal often counts toward NAADAC NCAC renewal if the provider holds both OCDP/TCB and NCC AP approval simultaneously.
Cross-state recognition: Counselors licensed in multiple states carry multiple renewal deadlines. Hours do not transfer automatically across state boards. Each board counts only CE from its own approved provider list during its own cycle.
A practical counselor training approach: choose providers that hold approval from multiple bodies at once. Where Counselors Trip Up at Renewal
Counting CE hours too early. Hours only count during the current renewal cycle. Confirm your cycle start and end dates before logging anything.
Using unapproved providers. Provider lists change cycle to cycle. Verify board approval before starting a course, not after finishing it. The NAADAC approved CEU courses guide covers how to verify provider approval before enrolling.
Missing the ethics requirement. Completing 40 CE hours with only 3 ethics hours when 6 are required means your renewal is incomplete regardless of total count. Track ethics hours separately.
Waiting until deadline month. Renewal processing times vary by board and may take several weeks; check the current NAADAC FAQ for current turnaround estimates. Submitting in the final days of your cycle risks a credential lapse even if CE hours are complete. Build a 60-day buffer.
Losing certificates. NCC AP may audit renewal applications, and audit rates may vary; check current NAADAC FAQ for the latest policy. Retain all CE certificates even when submission is not required at application time.
Requirements change between renewal cycles. Always verify current CE requirements directly with your credentialing board before completing renewal hours.
