Initial Certification Packages

Tennessee Board-Approved Substance Abuse Certification Packages and Requirements
Degree / Education Required
Complete 270 hours of formal, board-approved education/classroom training.
Work Experience Hours Required
Complete 6,000 hours of clinically supervised alcohol and drug counseling experience.
Direct Supervision Hours
Supervised hours can be obtained by working in an alcohol and drug treatment or rehab facility under the supervision of a licensed A & D counselor who holds a Certificate of Qualified Supervision (CQS) issued by the Tennessee Board of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors.
State Certification Exam
Pass the NCAC Level I exam, administered through NAADAC.
