Missouri Board-Approved Substance Abuse Certification Packages and Requirements
Degree / Education Required
High school diploma or equivalent minimum. Bachelor’s degree holders or higher qualify under a simplified pathway with reduced requirements (see “Work Experience”).
Work Experience Hours Required
Bachelor’s degree or higher: none required. Associate’s degree or 1-year addiction certificate: 1,000 hours. High school diploma/HSE: 2,000 hours. All must be within the last 10 years in SUD counselor performance domains.
Direct Supervision Hours
Not required for Bachelor’s degree or higher. Associate’s degree or 1-year addiction certificate: 300 hours supervised practicum across the four MAADC II performance domains (Screening, Assessment & Engagement; Counseling; Treatment Planning, Collaboration & Referral; Professional & Ethical Responsibilities), minimum 10 hours per domain. High school diploma/HSE: same 300-hour practicum requirement.
State Certification Exam
None required.

Missouri’s MAADC II requires 90 contact hours of education in substance use disorder counseling, including a minimum of 3 hours in professional ethics. This CEU Matrix 90-hour package provides the full education requirement. Content aligns with the four MAADC II performance domains:

Missouri’s CADC requires 180 contact hours of education across the four IC&RC ADC performance domains, including a minimum of 6 hours in professional ethics. This CEU Matrix 180-hour package provides the full education requirement. At least 20 hours must have been completed within the last 12 months.

2,000 hours of supervised work experience.

This is Missouri’s IC&RC reciprocal credential, recognized by other IC&RC member states.

Missouri places no restrictions on the number of hours you can complete through distance learning, unlike many states that limit online education. This means you can complete your entire education requirement (90 hours for MAADC II, 180 hours for CADC, 300 hours for CRADC, or 180 hours for CRAADC) through CEU Matrix online courses without needing to find in-person training.

  • CRAADC (Certified Reciprocal Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor): Highest level requiring master’s degree with clinical application, 180 hours of education including 6 hours of ethics, and extensive work experience. Allows advanced practice and supervision capabilities.
