Initial Certification Packages
Virginia Associate Addiction Counselor Course Package (200 hours)
Package Education Hours: 200 Hours
- Degree / Education Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Work Experience Hours Required
- 4,000 hours (2 years full-time) of work experience as a drug and alcohol counselor. Must be currently employed at time of application.
- Direct Supervision Hours
- 200 hours of on-the-job clinical supervision with a minimum of 10 hours in each of the 4 counselor domains.
- State Certification Exam
- No exam required.

Virginia requires 200 hours of education and training for the Associate Addiction Counselor (AAC) credential, including a minimum of 6 hours in substance use disorders ethics. This CEU Matrix 200-hour package provides the full education requirement.
Education and clinical supervision are organized around 4 counselor domains:
1. Scientific Principles of Substance Use and Co-Occurring Disorders
2. Evidence-Based Screening and Assessment
3. Evidence-Based Treatment, Counseling and Referral
4. Professional Ethical and Legal ResponsibilitiesThere is no limit on the amount of online education that may be submitted.
Virginia Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (180 Hours)
Package Education Hours: 180 Hours
- Degree / Education Required
- Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field.
- Work Experience Hours Required
- 2,000 hours (1 year full-time) of clinical work experience in the specific AADC domains. Must be currently employed as a drug and alcohol counselor at time of application.
- Direct Supervision Hours
- 100 hours of on-the-job clinical supervision with a minimum of 10 hours in each of the 4 AADC domains.
- State Certification Exam
- IC&RC AADC examination.

Virginia Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Course Package (300 Hours)
Package Education Hours: 300 Hours
- Degree / Education Required
- Bachelor’s degree minimum.
- Work Experience Hours Required
- 4,000 hours (2 years full-time) of clinical work experience in the specific ADC domains. Must be currently employed as a drug and alcohol counselor at time of application.
- Direct Supervision Hours
- 200 hours of on-the-job clinical supervision with a minimum of 10 hours in each of the 4 ADC domains.
- State Certification Exam
- IC&RC ADC examination (150 multiple-choice questions, computer-based, 3 hours).
